Default can i put a 1996 motor in my 2000 truck?

my motor is blown on my 2000 Cherokee. it has 250k on it and i cant afford to rebuild. i can get a 1996 4.0 motor with 100k on it for pretty cheap.

the major difference i see is the intake, and ignition systems. can i move my ignition system from my old motor to the replacement? how about the intake ? is this a good idea or bad. thx

Proprietary emissions parts on a 1996. Plenty of info on this site to do your swap.

I think that particular swap get's dicy. You need to keep your 2000 PCM, sensors, and coil packs. You can fabricate a bracket for the coil packs...Pretty sure it takes a custom adapter to put 2000 manifolds on a < 2000. Without the 2000 manifolds you end up with issues for sensors like the 02 on the exhaust. (Idk if there are others). Idk. if any 2000, #0331 heads have a "TUPY" foundry mark down under the oil filler. If it were indeed a "revised" TUPY head, you might see if you could stick that on the 96, (thinking maybe yes), then you might be good to go.

Your 0331 may have already cracked causing the trouble you are having now. (They crack right in the middle, then the leaking coolant ruins the engine)

Been there, done that:
I put a '93 motor into a '01, You will be basically be swapping the longblock. reuse all the sensors and intake from your '00. Also no need for an adapter on the intake/exhaust, use the proper gasket for your '00.

A good tip here is to put both motors at #1 TDC when you swap the distributor over.

Have fun!

^^^ good stuff right here.

Holding the coil rail on can go something like this:

There's also some Dodge Viper swap you can do too, but the little brackets seem cheaper

I stand corrected! (I guess). I could swear I saw posted that the ports don't line up right, (2000 & 01 to pre 2000)(not talken HO to Renix here). And yes, again, for sure if you can swap in a good >99 head.

Edit....so you keep the later intake, but you still have the earlier exhaust.....02 sensor issues?

There's another thread on here about this very thing, replacing an engine on a 2000/2001 with a 96. They found a new exhaust manifold for the engine, the original exhaust ports on the head of the 96 won't line up with the 2000 manifold. But everything else here sounds spot on.......RR

Sorta what I was thinking. (thanks for the verification). Fly in the ointment is he needs a good 0331? I see coil rail stuff in your pic. That throws me off.

Would only be necessary to mount the coil pack like OE 331 head has the mounting bosses cast in, DIY brackets are simple to bend up & drill a couple of holes.
