Dealing with the same problem on the same vehicle. My parents took it to a mechanic without my knowledge and they sad it was the CPS.
Anyone have a link to a thread discussing replacing it? Mechanics dont work on my car I do

sounds like it could be a crank sensor. if ya get one be careful on the install some of them come with a piece of cardboard glued to the end of the sensor. install it with it on there it sets the installed height so the reluctor wheel doesnt smack into it. when you start it up the first time the cardboard piece gets knocked off. if there is no cardboard finger tighten the bolts and lightly pry up on the sensor and tighten the bolts. been there broke it paid for it. damn chinese aftermarket parts. when it doesnt start look for spark and injector pulse. you can pull off an injector connector and check the power wire with a test light. if it flashes when your cranking its got pulse so the ecm is telling it to squirt.

I changed out the CPS (Crankshaft position sensor) It took about 20 minutes and the Jeep runs like a champ now! I followed this writeup.

It has 2 bolts, I don't remember the size of them. Remove the top bolt first and install the bottom bolt first. This will prevent the bolts from falling into the gap left with the crank position sensor out of place.
What does he mean by installing the bottom bolt first?
I also read that you can rubber band the new cable to the old one, so you can pull both up as you remove the old one.
That's one heck a of long extension bar.
Does everyone have something that long?

How is it wrong? Maybe that's just the official name for whatever calls a cam position sensor?
And it does the same thing as a CPS would do.
There is no mention of anything called "Cam position sensor" in the official parts catalog either.
Notice part #7.

yea just a terminology thing i guess - never heard it called a "switchplate" before, but it's essentially a cam position sensor.
could a stator go bad after it gets wet?
my jeep wont restart after getting wet. no water in oil.
pulled plugs and dried up the cylinders by cranking with fuel pump relay not in.
put new plugs in and still nothing
could it be the stator?

if the distributor is wet, it won't work. Pull the cap off and spray everything down with WD-40, then reinstall the cap and try again.
