Default Camshaft Plug depth??

Thought of putting this in the "ask question" thread but to me answers get lost even when you do a 'search'.

Using a '92 4.0 block that I've had sitting on an engine stand for about 12yrs that I rebuilt to a short block but NEVER installed a cam or cam plug.
I don't see any info on how deep it should be installed and or what the tolerance is.
I've read a number of threads on the cam 'button' or spring that's internal with the little 'pin' that keeps the cam forced back to the rear. (I've used little plastic buttons on Chevy V8's) Also, my cam/timing cover has a little point that pin IS present on the back of the cover.

ANYONE here know how deep the cam plug needs to go in?
The rear hole that it goes in, isn't 'stepped' either..
I've been told that it just goes in "til flush" with the block.
But flush where? The outside of block OR the end of the champher that goes IN the block?
The plug that goes in is just a stamped piece of metal, just like a freeze plug (NOT very precise) so one would lean towards thinking
that there would be a greater lateral tolerance for the cam to move. I know that hydraulic lifters have a 'taper' ground in to keep the cam pushing toward the rear, but if one installs the plug too deep, the lifters will actually be riding on the edge of the cam lobe. And if too shallow, the timing gear will grind into the block and wear out the chain and crank gear teeth.
(Maybe that's why I read of soo many cam failures. ..?)

Going to make a few phone calls tomorrow to Maybe Golen and a couple others.

Thanks E
