A/c works only when engine is cold. Stopss when engine is hot
2001 jeep xj. When the engine is cool and I start it along with the a/c it blows cold air fine. But after 20 minutes once the engine is hot the compressor completely stops working. Any ideas on what it could be? Maybe a switch or something???. When the temperature outside is under 70 degrees the compressor works fine all the time. But when it's like 80+ degrees that's when the compressor stops working after 20 minutes. I'd have to wait 2-3 hours for the engine to cool down in order for the compressor to kick in.

Could be you need to remove a couple shims from the clutch pulley. I did. Took about 15 mins. As the engine bay heats up the air gap between the clutch and pulley gets to big and they can't grip anymore. Removing the shims decreases the air gap and lets them meet again.

Took off the shim in the morning. Compressor hasn't stopped running. Problem fixed

Have you checked you fan clutch ? your high side pressure is probably through the roof and thats why its cutting off when it gets hot. If the condenser isn't getting proper air flow at temperature it will raise the high side pressure creating a blockage at the orifice tube not allowing the Freon to turn into a gas liquid mixture. Just a thought dont mean to undermined any one i just dont want to see someone nuke their AC system without trouble shooting some things first. Your compressor will eventually purge all of the freon and oil through the high pressure releif valve and then it will stay hot. check if your high side line is extremly hot when its running as well

I've fixed the issue. I took off the shim from the a/c. clutch. It's been working fine now.
