A/C has me stumped

the ac is pulling me through a loop right now

The jeep in question is my 2001 4.0 auto

the e-fan is new and works when jumped but wont turn on otherwise, the compressor works when i jump the low pressure switch (but the e-fan doesn't turn on), the charge is good, and the fuses and relays have been switched out. am i missing something? lol :confused1: :dunno:

'00-'01 efans are triggered by a/c pressure.....r u leaving the a/c on long enough to build pressure?

taythegibs 05-23-2013 04:54 PM

Ive tested it on 3 separate occasions when driving it for 30 minutes till an hour at a time,

Is the AC going on by itself. Or only when you jump it. What happens when you turn switch to AC or defrost. Does fan go on at 218*

R u asking me or the OP?

The compressor isn't coming on unless i jump it, when i turn the ac or defrost on it just blows lukewarm air through the vents. I havent had the jeep get above 210 even without the e-fan.

There's your problem. Did you check the AC pressure with a guage. Probably need to vacuum and refill

taythegibs 05-23-2013 06:55 PM

According to the gauge i borrowed its sitting at 45psi, but that is without the condenser running.

I believe '00-'01 efans "turn on" based upon a/c "high side" pressure readings. So, if there's not enough a/c "high side" pressure, the efan will not turn on, unless coolant temp reaches 218F.

'99 down efans "turn on" when the a/c clutch engages regardless of a/c pressure.

static charge pressure should be around 85 - 100 degrees on a 76 degree day, your system is under charged by at least a pound.

taythegibs 05-23-2013 10:14 PM

Would refilling it via the low side port work and get the compressor to cycle or would i have to jump it off to get the pressure equalized before it'd run?

No reason to charge the A/C system until you locate & repair the leak(s).

Pelican 05-23-2013 10:38 PM

Is your gauge one of the single ended types that comes with the recharge kits?

How long has it been since the A/C functioned properly?

taythegibs 05-23-2013 10:47 PM

It is, and the ac worked a bit last fall, i dont remember if it had worked before a year or so ago.
