IIRC, if you have a brushed motor in there, it will run on AC or DC. If it is brushless with one of them newfangled barainboards in there, then you can damage it.
AvE made a YouTube video about running AC tools on DC a while back.
If you don't have a motor that will run on DC, then you can run it off an inverter.

I think the amount of time and money spent to have a borderline working air compressor you could spend the same energy and effort to wire in an AC/DC power inverter and sourcing a used or cheap new compressor.
One of the problems with using the AC Compressor as an air compressor is that the AC Compressor requires oil that it gets from the refrigerant, so although you may be able to build a set-up as proof of concept, having it work long term will be an ongoing headache. You would need to run Airlines, Mount a tank, come up with some type of pressure relief valve that signals the compressor to turn off, then rig some type of oiled filter for the inlet. But again the biggest problem with this is the constant need for oiling the compressor, which will then result in excess amounts of oil getting into your airlines and tank, and thereby filling your tires with oil as well....

I've got about $15 into my setup.
1. Oiling, the inlet side of the compressor just needs to suck from pcv.
2. Pressure switches are a thing, they're cheap.
3. Soft air hose is cheap.
4. You can find an old broken compressor at a yard sale for cheap, use the tank from that.
5. Oil in air lines isn't the end of the world. A slight amount of oil in the tires isn't going to hurt anything.
6. To run an air compressor off an inverter is going to require one hell of an inverter. $$$$$
