A/C compressor installation
 

Help please back in the summer the a/c compressor locked up and I just used a by pass pulley to get me through the summer. Now I have bought a new compressor I'm not sure how to hook up the lines on the back of the compressor cause it has what I think is called a manifold with both lines hooked to it. I do know that on the compressor port holes that one hole has a small opening in it and the other one is a lot bigger.This is going on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. thank you here is a picture of the old compressor, the new one is just like it. I can mount the compressor either way so that the port holes are the other way around. first a reminder, take a dozen pictures,phone or cheap digital camera. i do it on electronic stuff with lots of wires!.

i looked at my comp. it has a hex cap on the side near the head. it does look like you can rotate it . i also see a stick on label on that side but it could be anywhere.
hex plug? dont know what but its there. is yours?

depending on the internals, it may not matter!!

yes it has a hex plug but it would be at the top or bottom depending on how you install it. Is the clutch electrical connector on top or bottom of your compressor?

hex cap on RIGHT side facing the engine front. again its on the SIDE near the engine head.
i think the wires are on that side also.
i get the feeling the comp can be rotated. IVE NEVER DONE THIS JOB.

just checked both 98 and 2000. both exactly the same. wires on side near head. hex port same side.

I just did this in July. Let me dig up the pics. I do remember the fill oil plug points to the side (the hex cap). My 1996 model has a 1995 AC setup. The 1996 FSM was totally off on this.

I have to go do some errands now, but will post later tonight, with some pointers on putting it all back together. Note you will need pag oil in your system (Sanden oil if you got a Sanden compressor).

I circled the accumulator, which you should replace if you want the system to work properly. It's only $20.

I do wonder what model type XJ you have because the connection ports to your AC compressor are different than mine (threads on mine are on the outside).

Anyway, you should take the XJ to an AC shop and have them flush the whole system to get rid of the old oil in the system and clean out any metal shavings from the old compressor that could trash your new compressor.

Once this is done, you have to put the correct amount of pag oil in the compressor. Then put it all together with new O-rings, vacuum the system for a few hours, check that pressure is holding, and then fill with the correct amount of R134.

The whole process is time consuming, has to be done precisely, and you will need a vacuum compressor and manifold gauge set.

If you find an AC shop to do it all for a reasonable price, you should consider it.
