I had to get my jeep towed about a month back. the shop finally said it was the a/c compressor. how much is that gonna run me. they said they cant seem to find one. but my local junk yard has one. how much shud he charge? and will a bum a/c compressor keep the car from running?

approx 1hr labour + ac recharge if the pulley(brg) has seized this would make it undrivable

Well too a point yes....if the clutch went out and the bearings are binding the belt won't spin therefor making your water pump power steering et etc not work. A AC compressor from the Junk Yard I go to is about 2o to 25 bucks. But if your taking it to a shop they are gonna charge you for labor, freon recovery, and recharging your system, and misc charges trying to squeeze every penny out of you. I bet they are gonna charge you upwards of 300$ prob more. If you have a good shop they should cut you a break if they are using used parts.

That being said you need to provide some more info on your XJ and more about your problem to be able to tell if your symptoms are related to a bad AC compressor

it wasnt really a squeal,,,, and my jeep is a 95 cherokee sport. 4.0 auto......it was a loud metal ripping sound. loud enough to make people in sheetz turn there heads.

That coulda been your ac comp clutch shredding to bits. It happened to me once, when I open the hood little bits came flying at my face. Luckily it continued to turn so I was able to make it home.

Yeah new they are very pricey. If you wanna save some money go to a u pull it yard and get one out of a 91+ xj. Best bet is to find the newest lowest milage xj you can then take a look at it. Make sure is move smoothly and there is no red colored residue around the pully.
