So I've had my 2d 95 XJ for about a year now, love the thing! The AC worked perfectly until about 2 months ago, when the vents became stuck on the defrost setting (blowing out of only the window and my feet). No big deal, air was still blowing. Then a couple days ago, I started smelling something (like plastic burning) being blown out of the vents, didn't think much of it, But of course the next morning my AC fans won't turn on.

I messed around with it a bit and did some research, figured it could be the fuse or blower motor, but when messing around, i noticed that the fan turned on for about 3 seconds on the low setting.

I live in South Florida and AC is pretty necessary down here so I'd like to get it fixed asap but want to try to fix it myself before going to the mechanic.

I just need some help diagnosing the problem but not sure where to start.
Any help would be appreciated.

 

the vent select switch is a vacuum operated switch, when you lose vacuum to that switch, the default vents are the defroster vents, I'd start by checking the little black vacuum ball inside the front bumper (2000 location, not sure if it changed between years) making sure it isn't cracked and the hose is still attached. The burning plastic smell is likely a second issue, and I can't help you with that one.

 

Think i may have found where the vacuum is losing pressure, a hose coming from the fire wall cracked where it was connecting to the "vacuum ball".

But i wont know if that fixes it or not until i get my fans blowing again.

Thinking about replacing the blower motor, from some videos ive seen, it doesn't look too difficult.

Any ideas before i replace it?

 

Sounds like your blower speed switch/connector toasted.


The speed switch is easy enough to change but the connector is Unobtainium. Junk yard might yield a replacement connector. The switch can be purchased at most auto parts stores.


The Green wire is HI speed.

So after basically taking the whole dash apart, nothing appears to be wrong with the speed switch or blower motor resistor.

I did notice that the fuse, according to the diagram (#5), was previously blown and melted the socket. so theres no fuse in that place. I'm trying to find where they moved the fuse.

Also did some research about the blower motor relay, but apparently this isn't one. So no luck there.

Going to start poking around with a voltmeter

At this point i'm really tempted to just replace the Blower motor, but I have a feeling it won't solve the issue.

 

And as a last resort, anyone have a ball park idea about how much this could cost me if I just handed it over to a mechanic? Assuming no parts need to be bought, just wiring.

 

Take a look around the fuse panel. See if there's a tap at slot 6 or 10 (similar to the blue wire tap), with an inline fuse.


The red wire tap is for power seats, if installed.
