Bypass Oil Filter return to oil fill?
Hello all,
I am in the process of trying out a bypass oil filter that i am retrofitting myself. Does anyone see a problem running filtered oil to the valve cover up to 1.5gal/ minute?
I am worried it might be too much oil for the top of the motor, but i am hoping some one else here is more knowledgeable on this subject.
Thank you!
Dave

I will not be completely bypassing the stock oil filter. I will be bleeding off a portion of the oil after it is filtered by the stock oil filter. I just need to find a place to put the oil back after it is filtered again. The valve cover would be the most convenient spot for me.

I want to filter to less than 5-10 microns. i want to be in the .5-1.5 range. Looking to extend oil change intervals like i do with my diesel. I can get about 20-25k out of my oil (sending samples in regularly to blackstone).

Thanks. I appreciate your input. I would still be worried about the bigger debris floating around after anything above 3500mi, but that is just my paranoia.
Anyways this is more of a tinker / r&d project for me. Any ideas if 1.5gal/minute plus what ever if flowing up the the valves would flood that area or should i be ok?

Too small of a micron rating will filter the additive package out of the oil. Years ago I seen an engine that was using a Frantz Filter system, it was nothing more than a roll of toilet paper in a canister. It filtered so good it filtered the additives right out of the oil, leaving only the base stock to be pumped through the engine. Every moving part of that engine were worn out after only 90k miles, the pushrods wore a hole through the rocker arms! They were getting oil, but none of the stuff that actually lubricates and protects the moving parts.

Im not worried about that, i get my oil tested regularly including additive checks.
So back to my question, do we think it is doable to constantly put that much oil into the oil fill location?

You're burning way too many calories by over thinking something that offers very little gain. Worry about other crap.

So what you are saying is you don't know. I'm alright with that just looking to see if any one has the answer.

Just wondering, for personal knowledge gains, whats the benefit? Isnt all that work more costly than changing oil on a regular basis???
Im interested in knowing the need for filtration that good.

Have you even had the valve cover off?
Just looking at the head... it's hard to tell. Honestly, I don't THINK you'd flood the valve cover but I don't think it's a good idea to run the oil back into it at that rate either...
No one is going to be able to answer your question. I'd feel pretty comfortable saying that you're one of the first to try to pump that volume of oil into the valve cover. You're just going to have to try it.
This is stupid. You're wasting perfectly good Dollar Menu money.

He's going to starve the lower end and burn it up.
Then we'll see if it was such a good idea.
You can tell he's hellabent on doing it. Let's not try to reason with him. It's impossible.
