Default Burning smell, sometimes smoke when going up hill?

Hey all,

So I recently bought a 96 xj with 200k miles. When I drive up a long steep hills at a steady pace (around 2-3rpm) I smell something burning. Sometimes smoke will come inside the vehicle through the ebrake console toward the passenger front seat.

The smell and smoke goes away after I drive on flat surfaces at a low rpm.

Can somebody give me a suggestion or diagnosis on the problem?

Thanks

Are you leaking engine oil or transmission fluid?

Default not really, but grease is caked

I dont have any leaks that I can see, and my fluid havent dropped over the past month. There is a good amount of grease and grime on the block and tranny.

Is it possible that its just the caked on crap melting when the tranny warms up?

Grease and grime comes from somewhere. You'll probably have the best luck cleaning and degreasing the engine and trans, then keeping a close eye for any sign of leaks.
Don't get the electronics wet, esp. the alternator and TPS.

It's most likely the grease that's caked on the engine and trans but you most likely have a leak somewhere. And maybe it's hitting your exhaust pipe when it leaks
