Default bump stop question /explaination

So hey all .
im curious about bump stops .i havent explored this much .so if i could get some explination here.. i have a 99 i added a rustys 4.5 lift ,adj lca ,adj track bar . with 3in full leafs and 1.5 shackles . ive see advice to add extended bump stops before .but wouldnt this not flex as much ? i guess im looking for some explination on when to one might need them or want to use them? Oh also .i am planning to add some 1.75 spacers up front to lvl back out to help with the added weight of the winch..
thanks

Extended bump stops are intended to limit uptravel to keep tires from making contact with the body and possibly cutting a tire or damaging the body.

Theres suspension issues as well, but the above is most typical.

What size tires you got on it.
I opted to keep my stock fender flare after my 4.5" full spring pack lift with 32's from rusty's and had to extend my bumpstops a lot. It will limit your uptravel to prevent cutting a tire etc like overland said but will not limit your down travel. Your front should be fine in the front unless you disco your front sway bar, then you will need to extend the front. Also while you are up there, take a look at you brake lines. I know the lift came with extensions but it might not be enough if you flex out without a sway bar.

It all depends on if you rub, then whatever you want to do. Add bumpstops or trim fenders?

As far as the rear go:
You need them to stop up travel before the springs arch backward and damage your springs.
They are not meant to bend backwards.

Hylander got it as far as the rear goes. Part of a properly lifted rig is proper bumpstopping too. Not enough and if your lucky you get away with just a ripped off flare, worse case you invert your rear leafs and damage them.
Conversly the same goes for the front, ripped off flares and possible bottoming out of some of the sterring/suspension components.

bumpstops dont just stop you from hitting fenders. they also prevent bottoming out your shocks. a properly built suspension system will have properly extended bumpstops

I did neglect to add .. im running 31,s with no anti sway bars .. the tires do seem to tuck pretty nice and havent had any real bad rubbing when flexed. but i wanted to explore this subject a bit .as to see if this is something i really need to look into ? i do understand how these work and why.. but if im not getting bottemed out when flexing . or am i most likely botteming out the shocks ? and not tearing up the fender? prolly need to take a better look under while flexed
