Bump on driver floorboard?
 

Hello,

I recently bought a 2001 XJ, and I noticed a strange bump on the driver side floorboard...take a look at the pics. A bit hard to see but it's noticeable when your foot is on it.

Anyone else have this issue or is this normal?

If you live in the north you'd better check for a rust patch...
For sure pull the carpet up and see.

My 96 had a bump also. It turned out to be a parts bag with some screws in it. I assume that it was there from the factory.

Just an update, had a couple of things serviced and the mechanic said someone lifted it up incorrectly and it got pushed up. No rust rot wahoo!!

He hammered it back down and we're good to go. Sorry for the massive pics haha

Hmmmm. I have the same bump on my driver side. Now I want to pull up the carpet and see. I figured it was a rusted out floor plug. Ill report back...

I've got a bump also.

These bumps are the result of shops thinking they can put their lift points wherever they please on the frame rail. They usually kick them into place with their feet, and don't like to stoop down and hand adjust them to the harder to reach areas. The portion of the frame rail under the driver foot well is a long non-reinforced section. They are putting the lift point to far back instead of right by the portion behind the lower control arm mount. Even the section right behind the lower control arm mount can bend if the pressure is not distributed properly, but the long section under the foot well is definitely too weak for lifting without some device to help distribute the load across the rail.

If you inspect underneath the bump, and the frame rail appears straight, then the bump is a left-over from when the frame rail flexed, and disturbed the very thin floor pan. The frame rail might have un-flexed and went back to a fairly normal position, but the floor pan probably separated from the rail a bit and is permanently buckled.

As noted, it can probably be hammered down without removing the carpet.

For those with rust, this is also a very likely spot for the floor pan to begin to fail. So rust will bubble and increase in size, leaving a bump. But there should be external signs of this when inspecting from underneath the vehicle. Soft spots, holes, flaking floor pan, etc.

Thank you Jordan, I appreciate your insight. I had thought mine might be from a rock or a jack but IIRC when I looked from underneath I just ended up scratching my head why that is there. There are no signs of a wreck other than that bump and the "new" paint job. I feel a bit sorry for the PO of this Jeep. His shop(s) messed up anything they touched! (the paint even leaves white stripes on the glass after a rain)

I like those pix!! Leaves nothing to the imagination :). My dad used to like to take his '64 Ford Falcon wagon "4 wheeling" and would always come back with humps in the floorboard from all the rocks he would make the poor beast climb.....
