Default Broken Valve (Rocker Arm) Cover Bolt

There was some slight leaking from the valve cover (I think the book refers to it as a rocker arm cover) , so I tightened up the nuts all around. The very last one, of course, I decided to give it one more slight turn and BAM...the whole thing broke off!

I got an extractor set, but now I'm thinking...the bolt came up from the bottom and a nut tightened it down. Will an extractor even work in this situation? And if so, does anyone know what size replacement bolt should be used as a replacement? Thanks.

Let me guess - you lost one of the "studs" that the wiring standoffs attach to? They're not "studs" in the true sense, they're hex head capscrews with a stud section sticking out the top. They can be replaced with a standard screw (if it's a cast cover, 1/4"-20x1" should be about right.)

I got it out. I mis-remembered the bolt. It was a standard one after all. The extractor set worked and I replaced it with a bolt purchased from the dealership (freakin' $3.27 for a BOLT).

Glad you got it out - but there was no reason to go to the dealer for a new one! Why do you think I gave you a size...?

I didn't see your post until just now. I didn't think they'd rape me with just one bolt, either. Is it a particularly special bolt? Tempered for heat & vibration and what-not? Say yes, so I can feel okay about this transaction...
