ok i did the 249-242 swap in a 96 grand cherokee 4.0 and have no leaks ... while on a test drive i was hearing a whining in all gears ... after a little driving it went away in 2wd, then in 4full... and finally in 4lo .... i THOUGHT all was well after that .. but then just a day after the swap it completely locked up.. i lost 2wd and could only range from part, full, neutral, and low (at least thats what it felt like)... after a long week without my truck i was finally able to get into my garage and upon inspection i found out the front drive shaft was trashed (it was the cv style driveshaft)... i can tell you i WAS a little forceful in the disassembly of the 242 but it still shifts through all ranges.... now i know i have to go for a front driveshaft and diff knuckle tomorrow. (without pulling it back out and breaking it down again) is there anyway to tell if the t-case is still good or should i just put the 249 back in? though i would hate to lose the 2wd capability
