Broke Temp sending unit stuck in the head

I broke the temp sending unit that sits at the back of the motor near the firewall. The bolt-like head of the unit separated from the unit's body/sensor. This is not a good thing with summer coming up and not being able to keep an eye on the temp. Can the unit be drilled and/or tapped out? What do you all recommend?

Use an E-Z Out.

Typically you can remove the inards with some small needle nose pliers, then get busy with the E-Z Out.

EZ Outs are made in various sizes. They are tapered and have a LH twist so as to bite into RH threaded bolts. You'll have to see what the internal hole diameter is that you're working with and buy the corresponding EZ Out, or just buy a set that covers 1/8" -1/2" or so.

Be VERY careful with an easy out. If you snap that hardened steel off in there it will be a HUGE pain to drill out. They can work well but just don't force anything.

Good luck!

Not really a concern since the body of the sender is brass, not steel.

I loosened the valve cover bolts and lifted the cover a bit to get a wrench in there, had the same issue on my 96'
