Default Broke @!#$ing NSS trying to pry it out!

Well,

Trying to solve my P0705 code and not shifting into over drive, I decided to pull my NSS and take a look.

All went OK until literally 1/8 of an inch of the shaft coning out of the tranny was stuck through the NSS. It took me nearly 3 hours of gently threading the retainer nut on and prying away to get to that point. Last little tug and the inside of the switch came right through the back of the plastic housing! I was so freeking pissed! I pulled the switch the rest of the way out, the plastic was SOOO brittle, the inside of the switch fell apart.

Anyone have any luck getting used NSS's at junk yards? A couple parts placs have new ones but, the cheapest I could find was $280, ouch! They are all over online but take 3-7 days to get...

Dang, that sucks. I'll bet that my local pull-a-part lot would have plenty and probably not more than $5. If you've got one nearby, definitely give it shot.

I soaked mine in penetrating oil for several days and I was still nervous when I pryed it off the shaft.

Try junkyards... maybe you will find one that leaked a lot of "natural penetrant" on the switch.

Well,

Called around today a little. I found a couple used switches but none for a 97. I guess the switch from 88-96 is different than from 97-01, the adjustment hold down bolt is on the opposite side.

Found a new one shipped for $136, Way better than $240! Its manufactured by a company called Crown, same ones you find at any major retailer and made in the USA.

I guess living in MN the salt eats away at the plastic and it gets real brittle. All the JY's said this is a difficult part to come by. Even if I could find one I can't imagine trying to get it off the junk tranny.

can you give me a pic of it? where is it located at? There's a newer cherokee in the JY be me and I'd like to snag all the important/expensive sensors off it just in case mine take a dump.

i broke mine removing it...then another at the Jy. Finally had luck with the third. most of the time they just stick from being gummed up. you can easily rebuild them.

Glad to know I'm not the only one braking expensive stuff

Mattpar, the NSS is located on the side of the tranny. Here is a link on how to remove and clean it.

Mine didn't go smooth at all. Trying to pry it off with the nut threaded back on the sensor, I snapped off both bottom threaded tabs. I finally got a pry bar behind the switch and almost had it off when the threaded shaft of the sensor tore through the plastic backing plate.
