Default broke four wheel drive

i was wheeling in the snow today. i was going up a hill in 4wd and then it sounded like my fan was rubbing on my radiator or something, it obviously wasn't. at that time i lost 4 low and high. the front drive shaft turns in 4wd. if i grab and twist it you can see the rear drive shaft turn. im not sure whats wrong here i pulled the front diff cover and there's nothing in the oil (no metal). i have a front vacuum disco axle so i pulled the little cover for that and the shafts looked fine.
what else should i check?
thanks

check the vacuum disconnect. 4 bolts and can take it off and once its off, theres a lil ring that conects the axles try puting it in place by hand and move the vacuum retaining ring to the engaged position and unplug the vacuum line and plug the hole with a vacuum plug (or a vacuum tube with a nut in it to hold it in place) and try that and see if the 4x4 works

well i got the front tires off the ground today. i put it in 4wd and tried to turn the front drive shaft and i couldn't. and when i spin one wheel forwards the other goes backwards so im assuming my axles are good. im stumped. i don't know whats going on here im gonna play with the linkages tomorrow and see what happens.
