Broke a chunck off the head...

Has anybody ever had this issue before? I went to remove the thermostat housing and it literally just broke the threading in the head for the bottom housing bolt. I'm wondering if something stupid like this is going to cost me a head.
Its a 1990 XJ Laredo with 160,000 miles. I had just started on my tune up list and this stopped me in my tracks. I would hate to have to replace the head, i like my motors to have all original parts to decrease chances of failure.

It's happened before but I don't remember what the solution was.

There should be some threads left in the hole, right?

Probably putting a bolt in there then slather some epoxy around it & unscrew it out when it hardens

I would drill and tap the hole deeper and install a stainless steel stud , that way you can install the thermostat housing and still be able to change the thermostat when you need to .

Can you get a picture down lower so we can see what's left of the hole to make the best recommendation for you? You have to be careful if you do any drilling... go too far and you're into the water jacket. Ideally, if you can get say, a 4mm (long) helecoil in what's left of the hole, it'll hold. That's the easiest method... if you have to do something other than that, it just goes south from there

If you put in a stud you can glue it in so if it hits a water jacket you can seal it .

And, you can see through the stat opening where the bolt currently goes.

It's a blind hole. Probably wouldn't matter if you drilled through. There's plenty of sealers that would work.

I appreciate all the help guys! Sorry for the extremely late reply. My other project kind of grabbed me by the neck and side tracked me. Back to the jeep, I will more than likely tap a 4mm helecoil in there and see how it goes. Poor thing has been sitting for almost 2 months D: if that doesn't work, I guess I'll be looking for a new head. With my luck I wouldn't be suprised if tapping a helecoil in there breaks it even more :hang:
