Broke Axle/U-Joint
Went wheeling over the weekend and my axle/u joint broke on my drivers side. I knew it was going to happen eventually just because it hasn't been replaced yet and it was making noises. Anyway, I was wondering how I go about replacing the axle part. I have an Aussie, so I don't know if that changes anything.

go to the junkyard and pull a shaft, looks like you dont have abs but the shaft from an abs jeep will have a heavier u joint so thats the route i would go. to remove it you first remove the wheel, brake caliper and disc. If you decide to replace the hub bearing then you can just remove the 3 12 point bolts on the back of the spindle holding the hub in. Once removed the whole hub will slide out, then you can pull out the broken shaft.

Oh i forgot to mention, if you decide to go abs shafts make sure you get the pair, would be kinda strange to run the stock 5-260x on one side and the stronger 5-297x joints on the other

Thanks for the responses, guys! Will definitely be hitting up a junk yard. When I drive now, it's clunking. Obviously something is hitting. Should I not be driving this to/from work for the time being? lol
Cheers, guys

If I can't find something at the JY when I go, can I order the replacement from RockAuto? I just briefly checked, I don't quite know what I'm looking for. '92 with a D30, drivers side.

im not entirely sure but i would imagine it would be something like drivers side inner shaft or just axle shaft and i believe the outer part is called a stub shaft or something

Thanks for the info, guys! Quick question.. I know it's not driveable in its current state, but can I remove the yoke/axle, then plug the axle from leaking and drive on the street in 2WD? My passengers u joint broke my first time out with the Jeep when I got stuck pretty deep in mud. I removed the yoke/joint and had a plug that allowed me to drive around without it leaking and such. It's just a little inconvenient to have my Jeep out of commission at the moment.
Cheers

not sure, but that sounds like a bad idea to me and I wouldn't do it to mine. what do you mean out of commission though? go grab the parts and swap out that axle. should take no more than 30min to swap in and out.. I did full circle clip upgrade, installed ujoints, and swapped out shafts in a matter of a few hours. it goes quick

Well I have to go to the JY, which close at 4 I believe, and I'm working late at work so it's hard to go. Not to mention it's getting darker sooner. And more importantly, due to where I live, I can't really "work" on my Jeep. I live in a condo apartment, with a community garage and they don't allow you to work on your vehicle in the garage. I might be able to do something quick in the loading zone, though. I'll probably end up buying the parts from RockAuto (or an online place). I'm looking now to see if I can find what I need.
Cheers
Edit: Is this what I need? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...389&cc=1180112
