Bleed your breaks and try.new hardlines

The brake booster is vacuum actuated, so a leak could be the problem.
If you have a vacuum leak, your engine will be idling high even after it's warmed up (over 1500 rpm) so that should give you a clue.
If your brake's master cylinder is full, and you DO have brakes when you mash down on the pedal, (not pump) Best guess is the booster is gone.
It's only about $50 at the JY.

Engine does idle high after warm which line is it? Not easy to spot like most cars , its an 89

freegdr Sep 26, 2012 06:37 PM

pump brake pedal untill it get hard then start xj pedal should drop a little this will indicate brake booster is working properly .

morgan320i Sep 26, 2012 06:44 PM

my xj is not like that

morgan320i Sep 26, 2012 06:44 PM

could my abs pump be bad?

freegdr Sep 26, 2012 06:47 PM

you have abs thats completly different set up .

Marcucco Sep 26, 2012 06:52 PM

An 89 doesn't have ABS

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak.
If you can't spot it with a visual inspection, get a propane torch like you'd use for plumbing.
Turn it on without lighting it.
Use the torch to spray the propane gas on the vac. lines and fittings.
When you come to the leak, the engine idle will jump up because the engine is sucking propane.
