Default Brake pad orientation

I've done brakes on a range of years of XJ 88 to 2001. Sometimes I see the brake pad with the single slide guide up and sometimes down. I've seen a few posts with it flipped and videos as well. I was under the impression that they pointed up and the double point was down. I just changed out a axle U-joint on a 96 that had the double point up. It's about 50% split, who is doing them wrong?

Thanks. That is the way I've been doing it.

yes. that is the correct way to do it, just because of the way the rotor turns, you can see it only makes sense to lock the bottom and the top pad pushes against the bracket.

if there is a groove worn into the lower bracket, you want to clean it, add some weld to fill the groove, and grind flat again just so the brake pad doesn't hold up in the worn out groove. then add a bit of grease there. just a slight film, no more.

I've seen it been done both ways. The diagram shows the correct way, but either way didn't cause any issues.

I would be more concerned about what caged posted above. You want to make sure you don't have any grooves.

I did have grooves. They have been filled and squared. The pads have been corrected and calipers have been greased. I even had some extra time to paint the calipers red... because race Jeep.

Some pads come with an assortment of shims if you have grooved knuckles. They clip onto the pads. Never tried them myself yet, but its an option if you dont own a welder or have access to one.
