Default Brake master cylinder clean out.

Just bought a 96 XJ and am going through all fluid changes. Got the engine oil, trans. transfer and both diffs. changed and have sucked out the power steering fluid also. That leaves the brake fluid which looks very bad.
I am going to remove the master cylinder and take it apart and clean it so that I can pull clean fluid through. Has anyone done this to try to save the master cylinder?

Just remove the fluid. I use a turkey baster from the dollar store.

Add new fluid.

Bleed the system.

I love this tool: https://www.harborfreight.com/brake-...der-92924.html

I have a Mighty Vac and have tried to clean out the old fluid but cannot get it really clean, that is why I want to remove and clean the old stuff out if I can. If the master cylinder is like most there should be a snap ring then I can remove the guts out of the master cylinder to clean.

Don't waste your time tearing down the MC. There is a reason none of the auto parts stores sell MC rebuild kits anymore. A rebuilt MC is dirt cheap. I'm with cruiser, suck the fluid out of the MC, wipe it out, suck new fluid through. Stop looking at it after that.

If the brakes act up after that, swap out the MC with a Reman. That's one of those things if you take it apart, might as rebuild it. Or in this case, replace it.
