Default Brake fluid lines issue

200 Cherokee, 4.0 Liter, automatic, with 9" rear drum brakes.

My brake pedal went to the floor on the way home but I limped it back. Found an obvious leak on drivers side rear tire. Crap, I hate drum brakes. I got everything apart and find I need a new wheel cylinder. Ok, I'll do the brakes while I am at all this.

I am removing the wheel cylinder when I snap off the brake line that goes to a square junction box for the rear brakes. It appears to be welded to the axle. Ok, so I take the line from the junction box thinking I would take it to the auto parts store. I take the plastic plug from the new wheel cylinder that plugs the brake line attachment hole. I jam that into the hole left by the brake line to the wheel cylinder being removed.

I then notice it looks like it is still leaking but from under the square junction box on the front side. About a drip every second or so. I double check and the plastic plug is holding but it is still leaking and after wiping everything down, it still appears to be leaking from the bottom front side of the junction box.

Has anyone seen this before?

Can that box be replaced without welding it?

Is it possible for it to leak in this manner?

Or has the soft rubber hose that goes forward sprung a leak at the connector?

I am going to recheck it tomorrow when I have better light.

Anything else I should be careful of when replacing these hoses?

Thanks,
Bob

I do not have all the answers, but the junction box is part of the soft brake line. The tube exiting vertically is the axle vent tube. Beneath vent tube should be a nut or hollow bolt holding box onto axle. Remove vent tube and nut/bolt to remove brake line.

Ok, that makes sense. I think I blew the nut off in a recent accident as well as rupture the tube. I slammed the **** out of the brakes and with the corrosion, it makes sense. I am literally missing the bolt that holds it down.

Double flares are real easy to do with Nicopp line, much easier than steel. I rarely get a leaker.
