Brake drag/ Caliper info
 

I am suffering brake drag on my 1992 sport XJ. Unfortunately, I do not have a owners manual and I cannot seem to find any specifics in any threads. Does anyone know what the specs on replacement calipers, brake pads, and rotors are? Thanks in advance for any info.

I just replaced my calipers, rotors and pads. Go to napa or AutoZone/advance auto and tell them what you need. They will bring up what you need. I've always had great experience from Napa parts. Not too expensive either. Ended up being around 150 for everything.

Awesome thank you. Did you look at your rotors, first, to see if they needed be replaced? I haven't looked yet, is there a way to diagnose if they need to be changed without removing the tires?

Rotor/calipers and hoses also make sure slides are not grooved.

Rotors shouldn't have a lip on them, if so they are worn down. You can usually tell if they are warped when you brake medium-hard from highway speeds (like on an off ramp) it will vibrate and shake the steering wheel. If your rotors are really rusty I'd get new ones anyway.

You probably have a sticking/frozen caliper. Get a rebuilt one at the parts store or online and call it a day (with new pads while you're at it). Sometimes the piston itself gets stuck/frozen in the caliper itself, or more likely the slide pins are seized up. There's usually a core charge so bring your old ones with you.

Rear brakes are all drums (unless converted to disc). Drum hardware can seize up, but that's probably not your problem.

Okay thank you. I will check for a lip on my rotors, and I haven't felt any wobbling in the wheel while braking. And it seems to be only the front to, so far.

Get new front hoses, calipers, pads, rotors. Most of that stuff is probably 24 years old on your Jeep.

Do it all at one time. Be safe. Get quality parts. Your life, and others', does depend on it.

Yes I did inspect them. I bought everything before hand so I could do everything if I had to. If things were ok then I could take stuff back and get a refund.

Did you replace it yet? Make sure you get the right wrench for the brake bleeder valve. They will strip/round off pretty easily.

Thanks firestorm500, I am looking into all new parts. I believe that the pads have been changed, however the rest seems to be original and old. I have not started any of the work yet, time a hard thing to come by right now. Thanks for the tip about the bleeder bolt, good to know that before I start.
