bought a jeep, starting/stalling problems

just bought a 1993 XJ from a co-worker that had intermittent stalling problems...figured i could figure it out i drove it a couple days and seemed that if i could catch it in the act of trying to stall i'd put it to the floor and it would come out of it most of the time. Other times i could park it and go to start it a little later and it wouldnt start for the longest time. at that time i discovered i had no spark, sure smelled like i was getting fuel. after reading now that a crankshaft position sensor kills spark and fuel.....i replaced the sensor yesterday and it started up and ran like a dream, i tooled around town left it running *when usually it would die* it did great..took it to work this morning, no problems at all, left for home from work and i got to my first stop sign about half a mile from work, took off and it went about 30 feet and hiccuped and died. coasted to a stop and cranked and cranked and cranked and cranked...nothing...so i left it sit in a safe place and got a ride home. the sensor i put in was from oreillys with a "lifetime" warranty on it.

im absolutely stuck, what do i check when i get back to it? i almost bet it will start....please help!

Try reinstalling the original CPS just for yuks. Is the wiring harness/connector corroded or frayed? Best bet on reliable CPS is the dealer item.

alright, ill see what i can do, i wish it wasnt so damn hard to get that sensor in, had to have a buddy help me with it! i just dont understand how a good aftermarket one can fail in 20-30 miles

"catch it in the act of trying to stall i'd put it to the floor and it would come out of it most of the time."

Did you check the TPS for dead spots with a DMM? As well have you cleaned and refreshed all the grounds?

No and no, as I'm looking for advice on what to do. I know what I'm doing, went to school for this stuff but I just don't know the nature of the beast

Would a bad tps cause no spark?

Turbo X_J 04-07-2014 11:12 PM

Simple stuff first, clean up all the grounds.

Where are they at?

well turns out im getting no spark and no fuel...also no rpm fluctuation when im cranking it over..gonna get a "replacement" crank sensor and see how that goes..
