Hey guys,

Im looking for a 4.0L block to build a stroker out of My question is there anything different from the earlier 4.0 blocks that would be different from my 2000?

yes, as the blocks get newer they keep all the mounting bolt holes and whatnot, however old blocks dont have the new stuff, for obvious reasons

Right Im going to try to get a 97-01 block just cause of the new intake and whatnot.

So the Coil on plug system will not affect the block?

i really have no idea, im just passing on second hand knowledge

I think the Renix blocks are thinner, also...

in 96 the block was strenghtened with extra webing in the block,there was also changes made to the main bearing studs to strenghten them. I just bought a 258 to get the crank and rods for my stroker soon,the block is exactly the same,there realy has been no change to them until 96. The 258 was upgraded with a better head and fuel injection to make the 4.0,there were some other slight changes but those two were the main ones. I find it amazing how jeep continued to improve the xjs over the years by making simple changes.
My point is the block has had very few changes to it until 96.

go for a same year junk yard motor.. although others may have better, yet hopefully not more expensive alternative

Alright I will have to find a block out of a 2000 just to make my life easier.

Abovetimberline: Do you think getting a 258 motor as a parts motor is a better way to go than buying all the parts new? I want a dependable stroker at the end of it.

I found a deal on a 258 (4.2L) Crank and Connecting rods Along with pistons. all for 100 they are used and already pulled from the motor. Is this a good deal?

$100 is not a bad prise at all,if you had to buy it you could add at least $300 to that,from your other post,I just bought a 258 for $35 complete for my swap,and when it is done I will be trading my shortblock and older head for another 258,I have no problems with using older motors for my rebuild vs buying new,you just need to have a good machine shop inspect and at least polish the crank and inspect the rods.

Okay cool I sent the guy a PM and found out that the crank is a "short nose" do you know what year 4.0L block that will work with? and how much does it normally cost for a machine shop to inspect them and maybe take 0.010 off?

Any 4.0 block will work,but 96 and above were the stronger blocks,but any 4.0 would be fine. I paid $140 for the shop to polish the crank on my motor and a new set of bearings,I would let the the shop let you know what needs to be done,make sure they are a good shop. Besides the crank though you will need new cam bearings,block cleaned,and bored out at least 30 over,which is $30-40 per hole. I plan on spending about $600-700 to rebuild mine,which is a bargain when you compare it to a rebuilt motor.

Yeah thats not too bad...I was expecting more. At school I just got done building a Blown 460 Big block thats going in a fox body that should run mid 8's we got a bunch of machining done so I can get that shop to do it. And im sure they will give me a good price.
