is it necessary to warm up your engine when its cold old?
I've heard mixed things about it
fuel injectors are supposed to be able to handle it, just wonder what peoples experiences/opinions are
thanks

I do but it's more for my comfort than concern for my engine. I also have a winter front on and a block heater. So I plug in at night, start it up in the morning (my ignition switch is very hard to turn when it's -10 and below), let it warm up about 15 - 20 minutes, drive 40 minutes to work, plug it in all day, start it and let it warm up again and drive home, plug it in. I only do this if it's below 0.

I had a buddy ruin an engine driving hard right after starting in real conditions. A little warm up time is good. Give the oil time to warm up and distribute properly.

If you are one of those guys who runs 20w50 oil, then yeah you should let it warm up. If you run 5w30 or something similar, then you don't need to let it warm up. I do it because I have leather seats and those things are downright uncomfortable when it's single digits outside.

Question Sry i'm new to this and may be doing this wrong

I just got a 96 jeep grand cherokee larado....I went to start it the day after I got it and it wouldnt heat up, took the kids to school on the way the temp gage in the truck says it was where it should be but still NO heat at all. I get almost home and the truck is smoking like no other i jump out pop the hood and take the coolant cap off and the *** b4 me must have had more water than coolant in it so it froze. Ok so I heat everything up and get it going again ive changed the thermostat, temp sensor, flushed the fluids, and cleaned out the heater core hoses however i still get NO heat in the truck! I am stuck at this point....the hoses get hot..and if i keep the heat off for a few mins it gets alil warm but then blows cold air again...i have taken the coolant cap off and let the truck run and the coolant does not even get warm...any thoughts on this at all? I have looked all over the net and done everything ive seen so far other than the blend door thing which looks like a pain so im trying everything else first....I could really use some help..thanks ahead of time

Sadly we do a lot of short runs, which are probably not good for the motor.

We let it run to warm up and get to a decent operating temp before taking off.

We love the heat, and I think the motor does as well.

When I was in auto school my teachers both told me the most you should warm your vehicle up is two minutes. They said after that you're just wasting gas. You can warm it up longer but that's for your comfort. Engines only need a couple mins to get the oil going thru it well.

i plug mine in when it falls below freezing. mainly because its more fuel efficient at operating temps, and the faster it gets there, the less fuel im burning uselessly.
