Just some info for anyone thinking of going to a larger size battery in an XJ
After much banter and discussion, went out and bought a Super Start Extreme Group 34 from O'Reillys at 94 bucks.
810+ CCA & 1000 CA.
Need this crank power for the cold/hot we get in CO.
This fit like a glove and even the hold down still fits as well.
I do not know about other brands But a fellow Cherokee owner/forum member nearby says a Sears Grp 34 Die Hard Plat does as well.
My main concern was the hood underside channel hitting the neg batt post. But it clears, even tested by glopping some sili seal on the post and closed the hood and bounced it a few times. Upon opening there was no goop on the underside hood channel.

I flipped the hold down piece (from the header panel to the front thread rod) upside down so it will still tie the hold down bracket to the panel-Nuts will not go all the way but alittle silicone on them will keep em from loosening.




Without modification You cannot go bigger than this size.

The stock battery is a 34 group series. I would go with a 64 or 24 DCM (marine) roughly the same size and the 24DCM puts out ~1000 CA, and its cheaper.

 

The guys at 3 different parts stores have been telling me Grp 58 for the Cherokee.
So I was lead to believe that was OE replacement size.
