Default Lubricants

I have a 2001 XJ with the 4.0 and an automatic transmission I recently acquired. It has just shy of 187K on it, but runs very good.

It didn't have an owner's manual. I want to find out the grades of oils I should be using throughout the powertrain. I'm thinking a high-mileage synthetic in the engine, but need to know the right grade.

Thanks.

"USUALLY" a full syn oil of any kind isn't a good idea in a new to you high mileage engine. My wife and I have 11 total cars, trucks, SUV's most all of our DD's do have syn oil in them. The ones "that do not have" are my XJ Rotella T oil, and our Power Stroke Diesels and one Cummins they have Rotella also. All get NAPA Gold filters.

Everything else gets Castrol 5w40 syn and NAPA Gold filters.

One thing you might want to have is a FSM you can get one in PDF format from Pacific Coast Manuals for $7.95 and download it as soon as you pay. It is the real Factory for your model, year.

Dex/Merc III in the transmission and transfer case. DOT3 brake fluid. 75w90 in the diffs unless you do lots of towing or off-roading (then 75w140).

Motor oil is a nightmare to ask about on forums, but I'll give you my top 4 and let you do some of your own research to choose which you'll want to use. Pennzoil 5 or 10w30 (just the regular yellow bottle stuff), Shell Rotella T6 5w40, Castrol Edge 0w30 (European formula--look on the back, it MUST say made in Germany or Belgium, NOT USA), or Mobil 1 0w40. Most Mobil 1 oils return poor UOA's, but 0w40 is an exception to that. Steer clear of the regular orange Fram filters, and you're good there, too.

Copied from my other post about oil:

5W-40 is a no-brainer solution. It will give you excellent cold weather start protection. It will give you excellent operating temperature protection in warm or very hot weather.

Last week, Walmart had Shell Rotella 5W-40 T6 (that's full synthetic) on sale with a $5.00 rebate. You might check to see if that offer is still available. It's outstanding oil with plenty of zinc for the flat tappet cam. Be aware the Rotella T6 comes in 4-quart jugs. I bought two jugs and used most of it with a Motorcraft FL1-A filter which gives an extra 1/2 quart of oil capacity.

Whether or not you wan to run synthetic is up to you. Some people say they get leaks with synthetic oil. Other people say they've never had that problem. Only you can find out for yourself by trying it.

Synthetics don't create leaks, they just tend to clean things out that were clogging preexisting leaks.
