Default Ball joint info gap, assist please, w/pic

four days ago I watched a video on ytube about changing ball joints, yesterday my left front started squeaking really bad. Having been so educated I took this snowy day for repair and relaxation (its also 25 degrees outside) what the video didn't cover, is how to get what the pictures shows off my 90 ltd. Seems that there is only one nut supporting it from underneath, but once removed it doesn't drop, it just sits there and chuckles at me. I beat it a bit, but it seemed to enjoy that, so I quit. What is it (called?) and how do I get it out of my damn way?

Smack it on the flat part at the top.....and keep smacking it until it falls off.

I will, I only have one side up, but I'll throw another stand under it just to be safe.
