bad motor mounts

A friend of mine has a 87 cherokee with a 4.0 with bad motor mounts but she dont have the money right now to fix it. Will it cause any problems driving with it that way for a while?

Define awhile?

wicked_xj 07-18-2008 12:02 AM

nope i do it
btw the metal over it will makes the motor impossible to fall out.
just watch the bushings.

racer0499 07-18-2008 12:24 AM

By a while i mean a couple months. And the bushings are at least half gone already.

I think you will probably be fine but I would get it changed out asap.

okcjeeper 07-18-2008 12:54 AM

Eh you will be fine I drove mine for some time on motor mounts held in by the metal part and gravity cause the ribber was pretty much destroyed..When I pulled the motor and took the mounts out the rubber inside fell out..:) Oh and they are easy to change with just a simple floor jack..:)

Depends what's failing - the bushing or the mount. My bushings were shot and just went out on the trail last weekend, so I bought new anchor mounts for both sides for $18. My motor bounces inside the mount without the rubber there, and I don't like the sound it makes, so they're getting changed this weekend. If the anchor mount itself (the metal part) is failing, I wouldn't push it, and if the flimsy cast aluminum arms are cracked or failing, I definitely wouldn't push it. If it's just the rubber in the anchor mount, she'll be okay for a while.

REPLACE THEM SOON!!!

You can cut into your radiator, crack your exhaust manifold.

It is real CHEAP and REAL easy

Here is my write up.

Might last for a month or so if just street driven but trails are pretty rough on mounts and may, as already mentioned, put your radiator into the fan or crack the exhaust manifold. So the sooner the better for the new mounts.

Even in the city if you gun the motor too bad and it shifts or if you break to hard and it leans BAD NEWS. It will cause more problems. You really don't want any reason to have more work for something so easy.

Like I said it is a real easy job even though it looks tough at first.

Agree that it must be fixed, it will crack your manifold and bust your fanshroud and possibly radiator. I have a temporary fix by filling the area above the bolt between the metal housing with minebelt, I guess even steel shims would work. A new mount is a cheap fix and manifolds/radiators aren't cheap.

TrueBlueXJ 07-18-2008 10:23 AM

^ Agreed. I've been driving mine to work all this week with the driver's side bushing gone, and it about makes me sick anytime I hear the motor jump. The new motor mounts came in the mail yesterday, and they're getting bolted on first thing in the morning.

Were not wanting to do it right now because she wants to try and trade her step dad her jeep for his saturn for her birthday in a month. If she cant get the saturn we will do them then. The only driving she does is all in town and not that much.

Does her step dad know about the bad mounts?

racer0499 07-18-2008 10:32 AM

yes, her stepdad would just take it and sell it because he already has another car.
