Have you replaced your O2 Sensors?

I recommend replacing both upstream and downstream Oxygen Sensors. This may cure both of your problems.

The original equipment was NTK sensors. They work very well.

NTK Upstream O2S part number 23151, downstrean 23099.

Rockauto has them (maybe the cheapest around).

Cool!

Make sure you get them by part number. They are exact fit. Never use universal fit O2S's.

Good luck.

Its a lean condition for sure, when you step on it theres not enough fuel, your bad gas mileage is the computer adding fuel trying to correct the problem. Id check fuel pressure. any check engine light on? could be some bad sensors. Could be low fuel pressure do to bad pump... etc. Id make sure your getting a strong spark too while your checking things.

Being a 97, its OBDII so you can get the code scanned for free at a local auto parts store. I would scan it and post up the code you get. likely that will lead you right to the problem.

Where does the computer get its information to know the engine is running lean and how much fuel to add?

I had something very similar in my 95 shed chug and back fire and accellerate like crap. Replacing my 02 sensor solve it completly and gave me 2 mpg back
