Bad coil?

I have had an issue with stalling on my 93 4.0. I replaced the crank position sensor, fuel pump, cleaned the the IAC and throttle body, and even tested compression. It fires up fine, i drive it about 5 miles, back off the throttle, and it dies. and then it wont get spark anymore. I pulled the plug off the back of my coil, pluged it back in and it fired up fine. Is there any way i can test my coil?

Thank you for your help!

Could be the coil or the cam sensor (AKA the pickup coil) under the distributor cap.

You can test the coil with a meter and a manual for both primary and secondary resistances. But if it is a thermal failure, you would have to test WHEN the engine won't start; otherwise the data may be in spec.

Or you could swap in a new one and find out in a hurry. They aren't particularly expensive.

I'm going to buy a new coil at O'rielly's tonight. Any suggestions on brands? Or horror stories? Any input at all?

I haven't heard of many problems with aftermarket coils. What they offer at O'Reilly's should be fine.
