Back storage box ideas?

Right now in my storage area I have all my offroad equipment tucked away in an old wooden box on the driver's side and then I have my spare tire on the right side. My high lift is on top and the entire thing is held down by 2 ATV storage straps.

The problem I'm having is that the old wooden box is open on top and very old. It's falling apart (nails come out and I push them back in...and the wood is just splintering away into nothing) and I'm a little worried about the open-top design causing problems in a rollover/steep grade situation.

So what I'm thinking of doing is replacing this with a couple "stuff drawers" and then put the tire and hi-lift on top of that. What I'm looking for is a way to store all my off-road equipment (straps, fluids, etc.) securely and preferably out-of-sight. Anyone have any pictures of this type of setup for inspiration? I'll have pics of my storage area tomorrow.

I use a Plastic shelf with 3 drawers that my kid used to use to put her socks and small cloths in. I screwed it into a piece of wood so it don't move when wheeling. If you want a pic I could post one...Tj

I have 2 lockable top Rubber made containers in my rear storage area, One has my tools and fluids in it, the other has recovery gear and any extra clothing and camping gear. Right now I strap them down with bungee cords but, I will most likely end up bolting them down like they were in my Toyota.

I am planning a box to cover the entire rear cargo area to contain my spare, tools, parts, etc. It will only be alittle taller than my spare is wide and will have eye bolts on top to tie stuff down. I plan to have the end of it able to open as well so when the back is fully loaded I wont have to unpack everything to open it up. When I can get around to making it I will post pics.. but for now.. use your imagination.

I have some surplus ammo boxes that I use for my recovery gear and parts and tools. They work pretty well as the latches hold them closed really well and the lids are weather tight so I don't have any issues if I have to leave anything at camp when its raining etc. I have them tied down with ratchet straps right now but I have been toying with the idea of using toolbox type latches to hold them to the floor. I like the idea of having as many smaller boxes as possible for ease of removal as I sleep in the back on most camping trips.

Here's the idea I came up with today during lunch (no pics, just a description).
The base to it will be 48" by 32" and divided into three sections widthwise, each 16 inches wide and 10 inches high. The two sections on the right side would be 10 inch high storage drawers (not real drawers, just box in a hole type design) and the left side would be a "cubbie" that would be 20 inches high. On top of the two right portions I'd put my spare tire, and then mount my high lift on top of that. I'm still pondering how I'll handle the spare tire (I can't decide whether/how to enclose it).

why not go with something like this. kind of expensive but secure.

Attachment 2748

this one is shown in a tj but would work in an xj just fine.

you could probably even weld a bolt or something to the top to secure your spare tire to.
