Well I checked under my jeep because the wheels where popping and I realized that my axle U joints need to be replaced. I was wondering how hard this is I looked online at a full right up and it looks pretty straight forward has any ever done this and how long did it take you to complete.

 

little time consuming but not that hard. hardest is getting the old U'joint out of the axle. I did go to autozone and "loaned" the socket and wheel puller. Had a hard time finding the right u-joint to replace it with all the local stores had ones that were about 1/8 inch to big.

I just did this last night on a friends 90 xj. It was pretty easy, sometimes breaking the hub bolts can be a pain. That was the most time consuming thing since I did not have any air tools where I was doing the work. All I used to remove and install u-joints is a ballpeen hammer and a vice. (and the vise is just to make it easier). Total time was about 2.5 hours.

 

pull the c clips and a big socket and hammer usually do the trick , i ended up buying the ball joint/u joint press from snap on and made things a little easier , go to napa for ujoints and tell them you want the heavy duty ones , there by far the best and strongest i found yet at any local auto parts store, and there greasable

really ? did you but the heavy duty ones ? i never had a problem with them

 

None of the heavy duty ones worked (Autozone, Advance, Napa, pepboys, and a few local stores) Seemed when the cast them there was a lil extra metal on the ends which made it so I couldnt get the retaining rings on them. Had to get the cheap PDO brand.

 

Well I picked up some at O riellys for the ujoints I'm about to dive in head first on the project.

 

I think every offroader should have the u-joint/ball joint press. ANYway you didnt say what yr rig it was for. If you have 297 size shafts I strongly recommend upgrading the u-joints to the 760 style instead of the 297 style. BTW I only recommend spicer or an aftermarket joint like alloy usa X-joints or better. Especially if you play in the rocks.

 

I have a 96. I don't play on rocks pretty much mud.

 

I would still get the spicer 760X joints since they are the same size as d44 joints. There shouldnt be much difference in price.

 

PingPong if you have the Spicer part number please list it because as you know most parts stores would be better off with trained chimps behind the counters. List both 297 & 760 joints please.

 

The guy having all the problems with Napa joints has an 87 with a NP 231 t-case... he has the 260x style.. Hence the reason all the joints he is getting are too big.. They are trying to give him 297x style joints.
