Default axle swapping

My 1998 Cherokee is making a horrible whining noise in the front chunk, and the gear oil looks like liquid metal. Instead of replacing the chunk, I was going to put the front axle set up out of my 1990 Cherokee in the 1998. I know gear ratios would probably be different, so I'm going to swap both axles out of the 1990 into the 1998. I was just wondering if all the mounts, brake set ups, etc is the same? or am I going to have to do some fabrication? Thanks in advance.

Severely stupid idea.

97+ axles, D30 and 8.25 are a dime a dozen......in 3.55

No more than $150 each.

You likely have a D35 in the 90..........utter waste of time.

I thought older cherokees had high pinion d30's in the front, but I guess i'm wrong.

Dana 35 is a rear axle and most likely in the rear of your 1990. If the 1990 is a auto and your 1998 is auto then they will have same gear ratio of 3:55 most likely.

You could swap just the front then I would swap the axle shafts from your 98 into your 1990 Dana 30 for the stronger u joints and one piece passenger side axle

Edit I seen you edit lol

Don't do it. The manual has 3.07 gears and the auto has 3.55 gears.

The older front axle has smaller u joints and a vacuum disconnect 4wd system which is prone to failure.

The older rear axle is either a d35 or a 27 spline 8.25, whereas the newer one is a 29 spline.
