Axle Slop?

How do I reduce some of the axle slop because it is really moving? I just replaced the Yoke and U-joint

Is this axle housing, or shaft? A little more info please.

yea more info , what do you mean by axle slop ? maybe your gears are getting worn and you have play in your pinion ?

well before i had to replace the pinion yoke that connects to the DS and the pinion. but not i don't know if the yoke is on all the way or that center bolt is slightly loose or not because i really tightened it down, everything is also of how its supposed to be... :dunno: so now the entire pinion and DS is slops back and forth a lot. I found out today that the drive shaft isn't bent or anything "the hard way".

Hey guy, that pinion is supposed to be torqued down real tight. 200# if I remember correctly. You stated in another post you had noise and so forth. This is undoubtedly the cause. Get a big impact on it or a pipe wrench and breaker bar with a cheater pipe.

yea it sounds like your gears are just worn in , the only way to actually fix that is to get new gears or maybe even get the old ones reshimed , but i really dont see it causing a major issue , mine was pretty sloppy before i redid anything anyway , but it never caused a problem

mudbogginjeep 01-19-2010 10:51 PM

yeah that could be the problem but it wasnt doint that before the yoke and u-joint broke..

i agree here.

oh yeah i agree too, but where do u think would be a good place to get a big impact rench cuz ive got everything all the way up to 100# idk where i can get a 200# though..

4.3L XJ 01-20-2010 12:04 PM

Mine will do the trick. My compressor stops at 175# Other impacts are rated for that much. Might have to borrow one

DEVILSTOY 01-20-2010 12:11 PM

unless the pinion bolt is severly loose thats not what your problem is , you can tighten it as much as you want but its not gonna make it mesh with the gears any better , your diff needs to be reshimmed due to wear and tear and at with the miles on it it may not be worth just reshimming it

mudbogginjeep 01-20-2010 02:19 PM

If my gears are warn and everything i might end up buying brand new gears but if not then ill just keep them the way they need to be because i dont have the money to fix everything, i wish though. but what im saying is that bolt may be torkd down to ehh maybe 140 pounds because i put all my weight on it to get it tightened... but idk for sure
