I have the same problem. It's whined ever since I bought the Jeep and it's most likely the carrier bearings. Were you putting the Jeep under any stress when the noise appeared? Like wheeling, burnouts, donuts, etc?

no, that's the thing, i wasn't screwing around or anything i was just going up a hill to get gas and i heard it immediately. and as i reached the top of the hill and coasted into the gas station it stopped. either 1) its the carrier bearing or 2) the pinion bearing

Yea, I'd pop the cover off and see if everything is tight down there. Jack it up and see if it spins freely and evenly. The backlash may be off, but who knows, I'm no differential pro. This is just what was recommended to me and makes sense, but it's too cold to tear everything apart. I just put in louder speakers and crank up the radio anytime I do above 35 mph

I had this problem in my 84 camaro. It was a poorly worn ring and pinion.

They will whine if worn poorly or setup wrong. how many miles are on it?

sounds like pinion brgs, If you jack up the rear ,remove wheels and drums, and rear driveshaft, rotate the yoke by hand , if the brgs have failed you will likley feel it. Also if you have a "new" pinion seal leak that couldbe a telltale sign

I know this is a late post. Not sure if you still have the problem, but this might help you to diagnoise your problem.

Check this site out.

www.ringpinion.com

Click on "Technical Help" tab on top of page
Click on "How-to" on the pull down menu
Under "General Info", Click on "Diagnosing Noise (Part 1 & 2)"

Good luck.
