Default ax4/np207 to ax5/np231

i have a 85 cherokee w/ 2.5L engine and I want to convert it to a 5 speed with the better 231 TC. Is this a direct replacement?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, it works and almost goes in like a perfect marriage. You will have to acquire a few things from your neighbors - XJ / MJ and a few things from Harbor Freights.

You'll have to remove the old Thrust Shaft, race and bearings, the control over slip trunnion and the intermediate gusset fork. Measure the output to input loss and subtract the difference between the two, add 5+" and use that for reference for the height / drop for the Transfercase.

Also the pressure hinge, axle wylott and mounting brackets off a 78-84 t5 transmission work wonders. Good luck and do a through job and you'll be pleased.
