Ax15 transmission shifter

Ax15 transmission shifter
This is probably a dumb question. I'm removing my drive train and have hit a snag. I want to remove the shift arm(the stick in the cab of my 97 xj) from the transmission shifter rod. I believe it has to be removed from the bulbous underside with some type of tool. I can't see any other way of doing it except removing the entire assembly from the tranny tower. Any help would be appreciated.
