AX15 Qs
 

Sorry if this is a repost, I just can't find the answer I'm looking for...

With regards to the ax15, I've been searching ebay and it seems that the listings indicate that a 1993 Jeep trans is different in some way than 94 and up. Is this actually so or are the people putting trannys up on ebay just slightly...unaware? I'm sure I have an AX15 trans. So shouldn't another Ax 15 from say a 1994 Cherokee fit it? I was told that the only thing to look out for when buying an AX15 is if you get one out of a wrangler then you need like a different pilot bearing and slave cylinder or something. Sorry if its a dumb question, I just don't wanna buy a trans and have issues with trying to put it in that I could have known about. Thanks. I'm intending to buy one that's been taken out of a Cherokee, they just all seem to say 94 and up, and I know I've got an ax15 in there.

actually there was a change which was the slave cylinder...the early ones up to like 94 IIRC was INTERNAL and the later was External.

Thanks so much for that info and link. Helps me out a lot. Is it possible/difficult to convert to the external slave?

im not sure if it is possible...as it has to mount to the side of the trans some how...unless there is a after market kit to do so.......your best off to get the right one in the first place.

Swap from internal to external is just a matter of bellhousing and input bearing retainer.



(and of course, the related hydraulics --- but we're talking the actual transmission itself here).


The Bellhousing will have the correct pivot for the throwout arm and the correct throwout bearing. And the new bearing retainer will have the shaft built into it (for the throwout to slide on)

Oh ya ... if you get one from a Wrangler ...the bolt pattern for the t-case is rotated slightly.


That means you'll have to drill the XJ pattern into the flange. Or swap the output housing/4wd housing from one trans to another.
