Default AX15 fluid question

So the FSM says that the AX15 takes 75w 09 API GL-5 gear oil. Reading on the forum, however, there was a comment about how that was a typo and that the AX15 took GL-3 oil. What gives?

I found NAPA's brand gear oil of similar weight to be GL-3, GL-4, & GL-5 compliant. This should be just fine right? There is som much talk baout how our XJs are pretty particular about the fluids we use and I don't want to have to get a new transmission because I was stupid. I live in a small town, so getting a particular oil like Rredlin MTL or Penzoil Syncromesh is out of the question if you don't plan a week ahead.

Thoughts,
s

I assume you mean 75 90w? I think its the same as GL-5, it should say on the bottle exactly what weight it is. I ran some sta-lube or something similar in my old Laredo ($12 a gallon) and it shifted fine.

I dont know about running synthetics in older Jeeps as mine would probably start leaking out of every seal. Dino oils been around for ever, dont think you can go wrong.

Do not use napa brand 80w90 it contains sulphur and will destroy your brass syncros. That was what was in my tj with ax15 had to replace tranny I started using red line mtl with great result's. www.myoilshop.com is where I got mine at.

I took a chance and added synchromesh fluid to it. its the same stuff the NV3550 in later models use and I have heard a few people say its ok to use and makes cold temp shifting less "clunky"
so far so good but its only been a lil over a month since my fluid change

Is this the stuff you're talking about? I don't want to screw this up again...it is getting expensive.

Also, can I just drain the old and refill this or should I flush out hte old somehow? Brake cleaner in the drain and fill holes?

Thanks,

Hey. Has anyone tried the Walmart Supertech gear oil? The bottle said it was formulated to be safe with copper and bronze. Would our synchros be safe?

Also, the local Napa had a gallon jug of Sta-Lube Hypoid SAE 85w90 Gear Oil API/GL-4 that stated that it would be safe with brass.

Does anyone have experience with these gear oils?

This is what I use in my AX-15, and it DOES shift smoother when cold out.

I even use Syrncomesh in my ZF-5 speed behind my diesel- per the instructions of my buddy who is a transmission builder. He said the Mercron V is good for the ZF, but Syrncomesh is better. It's only like a dollar more a quart so screw it.

w-I used valvoline 75w-90 that was GL5. Prior to using it I had heard about the problems with synco corrosion I called them directly and they said that they use a non-activated sulfur that does not cause any problems.

Shifts good, been about 3 months.

smtippin, All the fuss you hear on the forum isn't so much that the XJ is particular about what fluids you use. It's the opinions of many owners. So, long as you use the correct weight fluids in your XJs gear boxes. The XJ could really care less weather its $1.50 a qt. dino juice or $7.00 a qt. super synchro squirrel sappy snake s***. You just use what works best for you and what you can afford. That's what I do.Just make sure you do your regularly scheduled fluid changes and your XJ will last a long LONG time.
