AW4, think im screwed
I was driving this morning and when I pulled away from a light it felt like the jeep was in neutral then popped into drive. It did this a few more times before I pulled over, turns out the radiator connection popped off and all the tranny fluid leaked out. I went to auto zone and got some atf and dumped it in. it is still slipping bad, is the tranny ruined?

Doesn't sound good but then you may not have enough fluid in it (Dex/Merc right?). Do the post #23 procedure to check. When the level is good see how the trans acts.

The same happened to me, I stopped as soon as I noticed the trans was slipping and flat towed the Heap to a garage who put in new transmission cooler lines and topped it all up. I dodged the bullet, you might too - these things are pretty stout.

Be sure it is all the way full, a buddy of mine tore a line out on the trail and drove it until it stopped. He fixed the line and filled it with fluid and it has been working fine ever since.

What kind of fluid did you put in it? The guys at the parts counter will probably tell you the wrong thing because at some point, Chrysler started calling for the wrong thing. The correct fluid is Dexron III / Mercon, commonly known as Dex/Merc. If you put the wrong stuff in it, see my sig for a safe way to flush it out with the correct fluid. |
