AW4 shifting problem.

OK first off i have done a ton of research on my problem/problems but i have not seen a definitive answer.First off i have a 1996 xj auto.the first problem i have been having is my OD/lock up.It goes in to lock up if i am giving it gas going up a hill and when i come to the crest of the hill ad start letting off the gas a bit it will unlock. So it locks up when on the gas but unlocks when off.It also will unlock if i am on the gas hard.It never did this before.it does not do it all the time only some times. The other problem and it has only happened once was i was driving along and transmission was in like 3rd or 4th gear and it just kicked out of gear like neutral. As i slowed down i felt it go in to 1st gear.So i drove it back home and only had 1st and when it would try to shift to 2nd it would slip and have nothing till i slowed a bit and it would go in to 1st.so after i got off work i drove it and it shifted just fine and has been shifting ok since but still has the OD issue some times. So what i have done with a scanner is watched the brake switch and it would once in a while say i was pushing the brake when i wasn't.So i replaced the brake switch and test drove again and it looked like it was working fine(brake switch) but this morning i still had the OD issue. i have also put a TPS in it too.SO i am kind of stumped is it the TCU or speed sensor on the trans?Oh yes there are no codes.

Hi, did you get any solution on this? I have the same "problem" with the lock. Have you adjustet the TV cable?

are you getting a check engine light? have the codes read.

sounds like a typical trans solenoid pack problem. not very hard to do, but coil packs are $200.

Just for grins, try this. Now I'm most familiar with the 87 to 90 Renix Jeeps, but hopefully you have something close to this.
Over near the trans dipstick tube are 2 connectors that connect the trans, TCU, TPS, speed sensor, and NSS signals together. They are about an inch and a quarter square. Unplug them, inspect fo rbent pins, spray out with electronics cleaner and plug them back in. This procedure solved an early upshift problem on my wife's XJ. certainly worth a try.

I will look here again. When it first started i looked there but i will pay a little closer attention to the plugs there.

Did you find your problem? I have the same thing going on with my 96 xj od lock-up and random down shift see my post dated 11-02-13.

Did u replace the TPS with a mopar brand?

crp troller 11-11-2013 11:36 AM

Funny you should ask that. Discount auto store brand first one fell apart when I plugged into the harness. I guess i will call the dealer and price out a oem tps.

Besides all this, make sure ATF is clean and level correct. This on its own can contribute to shifting issues..

Use dex/mer III fluid too. DM IV are known to cause slippage too
