AW4 Shift sequence

I have a question, I am not sure of the final shift sequence of my AW4 trans. Does the torque convertor lock up after the shift into 3rd and remain locked when going into 4th overdrive, or, does the trans shift straight thru to 4th and then the torque convertor lockup??? Does anyone really know the trans sequence?

4th, then lockup.

Thank you!

Yes, 4th then lock-up on an 89. 87 was 1,2,3, lock, 4 no lock, lock.

Yes. An 88 to 90 TCU works better IMHO.

Never knew the 87 shifted different...

I was wondering if a 88-90 TCU would work in 91-96 too, I miss the 25mph downshift when I drive newer jeeps.

I have no idea if they would interchange. Guess you could look at a comparison of the 2 in a JY.

Theyre the same box, with the same markings, and same plug... Im just wondering if theyre internally different and somehow wouldnt work.
The main thing I can think of is the renix tps reads "backwards" compared to a HO.

Same part numbers?

Broken2001XJ Feb 18, 2012 07:00 PM

Id assume not, but Im not sure...
Ill have to look.

The TPS has two sides. The engine side works differently but are you sure the trans side does?

Broken2001XJ Feb 18, 2012 07:06 PM

no, Ill have to look that up too.
