AW4 P0753 issue heat related
 

I've been searching this forum but can't find anything like my problem so here's yet another AW4 post.

1998 Cherokee XJ. 125,000 miles

Transmission is perfect at startup when cold. After 20 miles or so at highway speed the torque converter kicks out and the rpm's change from about 1875 to around 2200. From that point on it skips 2nd gear when pulling away from a stop. Check engine light also comes on with a P0700 and P0753 shift solenoid A.

Transmission fluid has been changed twice and solenoid A was replaced by a reputable transmission shop. Wiring looks good to thembut I don't know if the tranny was having an issue when they checked it.
I replaced the transmission control module with one from a salvage yard. I've replaced the throttle position sensor with an oem. The transmission shop says there is not anything wrong with the transmission itself so they consider the problem not theirs.

Anyway it looks to me like a heat related wiring problem. Any ideas? I don't know squat about wiring and I don't know who to take it to. Besides a dealership. The malfunction condition also has to exist when the wiring is being check out, right? What procedure would be best that I can pass on to whoever I find to work on it?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. This is my right hand drive mail vehicle and it has been out of commission for about a month now.

BUT it sounds like another solenoid is failing. You need to spend time with a multimeter.

I think I might be getting headed in the right direction finally. With the engine cold I disconnected the harness near the dip stick and tested the 3 solenoids from the plug connector to the trans and they were all within 11-15 ohms. Then I took it out for about 20 miles so the P0753 would come on. I immediated retested the solenoids. B and C were just below 15 ohm. Solenoid A would not give a reading after multiple attempts. I checked again after 20 minutes or so and the readings for the A solenoid were all over. Flashing up and down on my digital meter anywhere from 4 clear up to 180 ohm. Couple minutes later it was steady at 14 ohm. That solenoid was the one replaced already so I'm wondering if it could be a wiring problem or a bad new solenoid. There was a P0743 code this time. First time I've seen that. Anyway it doesn't look to me like it's under the dashboard at least. Can the wiring harness from the dipstick to the trans be replaced? Or do I need to drop the pan? Can't do that when it's hot though.

Replaced solenoid A tonight. Same result P0753 and P0753 after 20 miles. Same behavior as before when checking resistance at operating temperature and check engine light on. Do I dare take it to a dealership?

If you haven't done so already, you should examine the wiring harness for the solenoids by the cluster of three connectors near the trans dipstick, and going down towards the transmission. There have been cases of the split loom chafing through to the wires within. And examine the solenoid harness on the left side of the trans.


If possible, wiggle the harness when you get the CEL, clear it, and see if it returns.



You may be better off taking the resistance readings at the TCM connector.

We're checking the wiring from near the dipstick down to the solenoids next. Should have done that yesterday when we replaced the solenoids. We're going to refresh the NSS too. What an ordeal this has been! And the pic of the wiring on outside of the trans is helpful too. Thanks Pat

finally figured out why nothing was making sense. the wiring on this jeep from the dipstick to solenoid A and B is backwards. When we traced pin 3 from the dipstick down to the transmission it went to solenoid B and pin 2 went to solenoid A. The plug connection at the dipstick looks like it has never been altered in any way. How can this be? Replaced B and everything is fine now. HOW CAN THIS BE??? Is this a right hand drive issue?

hey everyone, so I want to buy my first xj and this guy is selling his 1988 for a good price I believe. it has 267k miles on it and it starts up its an automatic transmission but he said the transmission will need to be repaired due to the fact that it does not want to shift from first to second after driving it for a while. can somebody tell me what might be the problem and will it be an easy fix? please and thank you.

Just replace the solenoids all 3. No need to fool with the multimeter, it's a 98. No need to drop the pan 3 times. Ebay $100. Done. Did mine years back still shifts perfect. my2 rubels.

This doesn't seem to have much to do with the current thread, plus asking for links to the factory service manuals will get you booted in a hurry. That said, googling for 1995 Cherokee FSM will likely find what you need. Start a new thread with your problem and someone will likely chime in with some advice.
