Default AW4: How full is too full?

I just completed the third drain and fill (driving about 100 miles between each time) to replace the fluid in my AW4 automatic. I think I added about a quarter to half a quart too much fluid (I'm using Dex/Merc III) on the last refil, and it's showing a bit above the MAX line on the dipstick.

Here's a pic of my dipstick showing where the fluid comes up to. I checked it hot and running in neutral. The fluid mark was right about where the black arrow is, and the acceptable range appears to be where I drew the horizontal line.

Is this close enough not to fuss over, or should I loosen the drain plug a bit to bring it back down to the MAX line?

Bring it down to the max line when at operating temperature. Too full and the planetary gears will aerate the fluid which will make it not shift correctly and could shorten the life of the trans.

If over filled it can puke out the fill tube, hit the exhaust, and then well...

Yes drain to full mark, then fill slowly next time till its where it needs to be.

So I could have caught fire when I was doing 55 and one of the trans line blew?

Yes, overfilled OR overheated, once it pukes, bail out and get upwind.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll drain it a bit when I get back from Watkins Glen this weekend (not taking the XJ, obviously).

Just keep in mind that it only takes 500 ml (about a pint IIRC) to go from the add line to max line.

Yeah, I just drained out about 8 oz. and it dropped about 1/3 in. on the dipstick.

I got it back from the shop once and had to drain almost 2 pints (!) from the ATF to get it normal on the dipstick. It was soon after, that I decided to start doing that stuff myself....After all, paying someone to overfill all my fluids, was something I could easily do myself lol.
I came to learn, that the only way to make sure things are done correctly, is by doing them yourself. Even if it means you f-up a bit every now and then...no worries.
