AW-4 transmission fluid capicty
i just got my aw-4 back in and wasn't sure on how much fluid to put in it. i had the pump and all apart and the valve body as well. the book only gives you the amount for after a filter change.

Complete fill including the torque convertor is just over 12 qts.
Without the convertor its a hair under 8 1/2 quarts...

In your case, I'd have said to check the torque converter, and make sure it hasn't drained. That's about a gallon on its own. Then, start by dumping in five quarts (the "service fill" plus one for the pump disassembly and valve body disassembly,) and run it and check. You should be fine as long as you're not loading it - but you'll want to make sure you do your final check "Idling Hot in Park."
If you're worried, pour it to "Full" on the dipstick with the engine off (between "Add" and "Full" usually comes to about a pint, FYI) and then start it. You can idle to get it up to heat, and you can usually speed up getting it hot by putting it in a forward gear range and idling with the brake on (this loads the torque converter and clutches, even though you're not moving.)

Are you quite sure? Just about all of the FSMs I've got show somewhere around 8.5-9 quarts for an "overhaul fill" (empty slushbox and torque converter,) and somewhere around 4 quarts for a "service fill" (drain and refill without disassembly.)
