Auto Trans - not shifting

So im stuck out here in the middle of nowhere, no phone, no store, no internet, no cold drink, and my 1988 4.0 aw4 4x4 dosent want to shift from 1st to second ect. reverse is ok, park is ok neutral is ok.
It has happend before once when i stuck a pressure washer under the hood . I changed out a relay and it started shifting fine again.
Well I stuck a pressure washer under the hood again and the trans didnt want to shift up from first, so i thought ahh ha! relay got wet again.
that didnt work this time. now what? so i waited a day for things to dry out and still no go.

when i shift from drive to 3-2 nothing happens
then from 3-2 to 1 the trans seems to drop to a lower gear . BUT
I think it is it first already - converter is locking up right ?

I have tried starting out in 1 then shift to 3-2 ect. no worky

I noticed that the engine has started to idle a little rough lately. TPS ?

i have learned to use the search and read that the TPS also works with the trans in some way.

I read that it could be a solonoid mabey.

i read that the TCU could have a problem.

I checked some wires for any shorts ect.

trans fluid is clean , and a little over full.

linkages look ok.

dome light works.

I know what a multimeter is

Please send cobeer.

*Note, I didn't even read your post because I had the same problem*

Replace your TPS with a brand new one... Key words there are "brand new". Not junk-yard. Not one that "looks good". Not one from someone else's Jeep. Just bite the bullet and buy a brand new one.

TPS was no good. problem fixed.
Autozone -$83
o'riley - $45
again.

1979 Dodge Palomino. I had a 1978 Dodge Power Wagon 4x4 with the gear driven transfer case the Palomino was to be for the cab as the PW was really rusty. - thanks swnp101

No problemo... just pay it forward. Someone else told me to replace mine when I had the same problem, I did; but the new piece I purchased (from the dealership) was also faulty... I ended up spending a lot of time and money troubleshooting this same problem. By the time I replaced the TPS a third time (after transmission work from different shops) it fixed the problem. I was so happy... (not really)
